I have heard multiple times that we are to remember the real meaning of Christmas. Something in me cringes when I hear a religious person speak these words. My question is how did the early church celebrate Christmas or Christ’s birth. The answer… they didn’t, at least not like many celebrate today. There is nothing said in the Bible about how to celebrate Jesus’ birth and further history speaks to the example of the early Christians not recognizing the birth of Christ as a point of worship or celebration. Around this time of year, one will begin to see a petition to keep Christ in Christmas. I say to take Christmas out of the worship of Christ. The Bible is our instruction unto righteousness to every good work (2 Tim. 3:16-17). We are instructed to remember Christ in His death and resurrection. We are instructed to remember the Lord’s broken body and the blood that was shed for the remission of sins (Matt. 26:28; Heb. 9:22). This remembrance is on the first day of the week with the Lord’s supper (1 Cor. 11:24-26). I hope and pray that each one has a blessed holiday season. Remember to let the love of Christ show through you and keep the holidays in their proper perspective.
